Lee Wachtstetter, a 95-year-old American retiree, has chosen a rather unique way to spend her golden years: she lives full-time on a cruise ship. According to Stewartville Star, this unconventional decision fulfills a promise to her late husband and exemplifies how seniors can pursue their goals, even later in life.
From Love of Cruising to Life at Sea
Wachtstetter’s love for cruising blossomed during her 50-year marriage. She and her husband, a former banker, enjoyed 89 cruises together. After his passing in 1997, she honored his final wish: “Don’t stop cruising.”
Since then, Wachtstetter has embarked on over 100 cruises, including 15 world cruises, visiting nearly every country with a port.
A Bold Decision
This extensive travel experience led her to a pivotal decision. Wachtstetter sold her Fort Lauderdale home and belongings to make a cruise ship her permanent residence. This bold move underscores how individuals can remain productive and motivated in their later years, embracing change and new experiences.
Life Aboard the Crystal Serenity
For the past decade, the Crystal Serenity has been Wachtstetter’s home. This luxury liner, with a capacity of 1,070 passengers, offers a unique lifestyle, combining the comforts of home with the constant opportunity for travel.
Known as “Mama Lee” by the crew, she has become a beloved figure on board, demonstrating how seniors can continue to connect with others and contribute to their communities, even in non-traditional settings.
