Florida law enforcement officials dismantled a significant fraud operation that was distributing driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants, as confirmed by a press release from the attorney general. This release indicated that several individuals involved in the scheme were employees of the DMV, who were issuing an “unusually large number” of licenses while accepting illicit payments.
To provide context, on June 12, 2025, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s office announced that Sheriff Tommy Ford of Bay County had successfully shut down what was referred to as “an illegal alien driver’s license scheme.” The press release further detailed that the investigation uncovered that the fraudsters were providing licenses to individuals who had traveled from various regions within Florida.
In an official statement, Attorney General Uthmeier remarked, “Florida’s Sheriffs are at the forefront of our state’s battle against illegal immigration, and Sheriff Ford is eliminating the corruption that they introduce into our state.” The attorney general also issued a strong warning “to any illegal alien arriving in Florida to perpetrate additional crimes,” stating, “We will locate you, hold you responsible, and subsequently return you to your place of origin.”
Additionally, the press release noted that Bay County police had identified two DMV employees who were issuing an unusually high number of driver’s licenses. Upon reviewing security footage from the Bay County DMV, authorities discovered that these employees were permitting illegal immigrants to circumvent “the necessary tests to legally obtain a license.”
Furthermore, as reported by the South Florida Reporter, Attorney General Uthmeier linked the fraud operation to former President Joe Biden’s lenient immigration policies, asserting, “I believe today serves as yet another illustration of how the Biden border policy endangers American families.”
Continuing, the attorney general highlighted the issue of the “hundreds of aliens” involved in criminal activities by obtaining fraudulent licenses, which Uthmeier characterized as “cheating…breaking the law…purchasing driver’s licenses without undergoing the test, thereby endangering everyone on the roads.”
Furthermore, Sheriff Tommy Ford provided further insights into the investigation, informing reporters that most of the illegal aliens who accepted fraudulent driver’s licenses “held some form of status.” He elaborated, “Some of that pertains to asylum status, which is known to be a highly contentious process and does not require much to obtain that status.”
Significantly, as reported by the South Florida Reporter, Sheriff Ford indicated that a number of the fraudulently issued driver’s licenses were commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs). In this regard, the sheriff stated, “Let me be clear, allowing untested, unqualified drivers, particularly those with commercial licenses, on our roads poses an unacceptable risk to every family in this state.” In response to Sheriff Ford’s remarks, the widely followed American Truckers X account commented, “Florida is among 10 states inundating the trucking sector with illegal foreign labor. This is occurring EN MASSE throughout the U.S. RIGHT NOW!”
